Clerkenwell Design Week 2012

Clerkenwell Design Week

Its that time of year again when Clerkenwell comes alive, bustling with designers and spectators. We managed to find time to pop out of the office and have a look around. We were so lucky the sun came out too!

House of Detention  - the converted vaults of a Victorian prison, is once again home to upcoming design talent from the UK and around the world.
Our favourites include the insect-shaped ceiling lights in porcelain and plastic that respond to movement. Designed by Jolana Vodicka Sornerova as part of The Czech Centre, showcasing a selection of upcoming talents from the republic. Her ‘Lightning Fireflies’ open up from a cocoon and stretch out their wings when they detect movement. The colour of their light changes according to the height of the person below. Also the ‘Greenhouse’ lamp for growing herbs by Kristyna Pojerova both of which one awards for excellent Student design.

Outside we visited pop up theatre shows and street installations.
A surreal pink and red umbrella forest grew up from the gardens of Saint James Church and a solar panel tree in the square which "reinterpreted the morphology of the tree and introduced the sensuality of the natural world into the urban context".

The Farmiloe building once again housed an erray of furniture designers and their products, installations and shops. We also couldn't resist a gin and tonic at the end of the day in the pop up gin bar on the top floor. Yum!

The history of the tattoo

This weekend I headed down to the Horniman museum to attend a lecture by Matt Hodder on the history of the tattoo. This was part of the museum lates weekend - where participating museums in the capital open late (or all night) for various events.
Matt's talk charted the history of tattooing as an artistic practice in Europe and America. Beginning in naval and religious communities in the 16th and 17th century, its trend setting period with wealthy aristocrats in the 19th century and its seeming ubiquity at the beginning of the 21st. He focused on tattoos as an art form, considering the role of tattoo artists, and examined developments in form, genre, style and technology. He presented a unique art historical perspective on a method of art making which has been misunderstood for so long.
He is currently working on a book which I have no doubt will be a fascinating read. Watch this space.......

Warner Bros Studio Tour London

Bea kindly bought us tickets to the Warner Bros studio tour.
It is the most amazing chance to go behind the scenes of the Harry Potter films and see the breathtakingly detailed sets, stunning costumes, props and animatronics. I am not particulary a Harry Potter fan - Ive read one of the books to see what all the fuss was about and I have seen some of the movies but it wouldnt have mattered if I hadn't. I was totally in awe at the amount of work involved in all the different aspects and am so inspired. Out came the sketch book.....

Last night...

....We headed down to the launch of Arcam by Joel Clifford at the Orange Dot gallery.
The exhibition had a great new concept - interactive visual exhibition .. Attendees are asked to scan QR codes beneath artwork to put a sound to the imagery created by the artist himself . We loved the clean screen printed images and the whole concept of the exhibition.

Movies above London.

Last night we headed off to a screening of the lovely film' Up' on top of Telegraph Hill, run by Electric pedals. We packed our biggest jumpers, blankets and a picnic basket full of toastie nibbles to eat to keep us warm.
The film was powered by man power. Everyone came with their bikes in tow, ready to cycle away, generating the energy to power the outdoor cinema with every spin of their wheel.
A beautiful night up in the sky with London below us. What a way to lift your spirits.

So many birthdays..

We love the look on a friends face when you go all out and make them a stupidly ridiculous cake-  This time a rainbow sponge cake with marshmallow and icing topping! Fun to make- even better to eat!

We are getting ready to launch our new Hand-cut Hen party invitation service on our website this weekend/the beginning of next week and we are very excited!
The mood boards are up and we have started designing-Think Mexican fiesta's, long summer nights partying and girls rocking classy pastels...
